Your Egg Retrieval Procedure
The egg retrieval itself is a minimally invasive procedure and relatively quick process — typically around 20 minutes. You’ll be under light sedation or anesthesia, so you won’t feel discomfort during the retrieval.
Using ultrasound guidance, the doctor will insert a thin needle through the vaginal wall to gently collect the eggs from your ovaries. There are no external incisions or stitches, and most people describe it as straightforward and uneventful. Afterward, you’ll spend about an hour in recovery while the anesthesia wears off.
It’s common to feel bloating, cramping, tiredness, and/or constipation post-retrieval. These symptoms usually resolve within a few days. Rest is a crucial step in a safe and easy recovery, so here are a few key recommendations and reasons to take it easy.
Rest & Recovery Steps After Your Egg Retrieval
Recovery looks a little different for everyone, but most people need at least 2-3 days to rest and reset. Think of this time as an opportunity to nurture your body. Here’s why:
Your ovaries are enlarged. During stimulation, the ovaries grow significantly as multiple follicles mature. This makes them tender and sensitive, and it’s important to avoid vigorous movement too soon.
Your hormone levels must reset post-medication. After weeks of injectable medications, your body needs time to recalibrate. Rest, hydration, and balanced meals help your system reset.
Anesthesia effects linger. Even light sedation can leave you feeling groggy or out of sorts the next day. Prioritizing rest ensures your body has time to fully clear the medication.
Your digestive system may be impacted. Bloating and constipation are common because the ovaries press against the bowel and fluid shifts occur after stimulation. That’s why hydration, electrolytes, and light movement can make a real difference.

Stay hydrated with electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water or sports drinks.
Choose protein-rich meals such as eggs, chicken, yogurt, or beans.
Eat salty foods — a little extra can help your body balance fluids.
Skip greasy, heavy foods, which may worsen bloating or nausea.
Rest, but move gently. Light walking can reduce discomfort from bloating.
Elevate yourself when sleeping. A 45-degree incline with pillows under your arms can ease pressure.
Address constipation by hydrating well, eating fiber-rich foods, and if needed, ask your clinic if a gentle stool softener is appropriate.
The Egg Donor Recovery Timeline
Every donor's body is different, but here is a day-by-day breakdown of what most egg donors can experience in the days and weeks following retrieval, and what you can do at each stage to support your healing.
Retrieval Day
Plan to rest fully for the remainder of the day and keep movement to a minimum. You will spend about an hour in the recovery area of your IVF clinic while sedation wears off, and you will need your companion to drive you home since you will not be allowed to drive after anesthesia. Mild cramping, bloating, light spotting, and grogginess are all completely normal.
As we recommend, start hydrating as soon as you feel ready with drinks high in electrolytes, like coconut water or a sports drink. You should also eat something light and rich in protein when you are ready.
Week 1: Days 1-2
Bloating and cramping should be most prominent during the first two days while your ovaries begin to recover from the stimulation medications and enlargement. While many donors feel well enough to move around the house, fatigue is very common, and you should not yet return to work, exercise, or a full schedule.
What to focus on during this time:
Keep hydrating with electrolyte-rich drinks to manage the fluid shifts that happen after stimulation.
Eat protein-rich, salty meals to support your system.
Sleep at a gentle incline to ease abdominal pressure.
Take short, light walks around the house to help reduce bloating.
If constipation becomes uncomfortable, hydrate, consume fiber, and ask your clinic if you should consider a gentle stool softener.
Week 1: Days 3-5
At this point, bloating and cramping should begin to ease, energy should start coming back, and most donors feel ready to return to semi-normal activity. However, lingering tenderness around the abdomen is still normal during this window, so you should continue to avoid intense exercise, heavy lifting, and sexual activity. Your ovaries are still enlarged and sensitive, and vigorous movement too soon increases the risk of ovarian torsion.
If your symptoms are worsening rather than improving during this period, contact your clinic right away. These can be early signs of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), which your care team will want to address quickly. Symptoms to pay attention to include severe bloating, sudden weight gain, difficulty breathing, or little urination (see below for more information).
Week 2: Days 7-14
Most donors’ periods typically arrive around 10 to 14 days after retrieval. This is the clearest signal that your body has reset from the cycle and your ovaries have returned to normal size and function. As your hormones rebalance, mood shifts and heightened emotions should begin to stabilize during the second week.
After your first period:
You are generally cleared to resume exercise and sexual activity, but you should always confirm with your clinic first.
You can typically resume your usual birth control method at this point.
You still cannot yet begin another egg donation cycle.
Weeks 3-8
Most donors feel completely back to normal within this time period. Bloating should fully resolve within 2-4 weeks for most donors, while your hormones normalize completely within these 4-8 weeks. Your periods will also return to their typical cycle.
While your individual recovery can range within this timeline, available research does not suggest any long-term risks or side effects to your ovarian reserve or fertility from egg donation according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
Day 90 and Beyond
If you are considering donating again, most fertility clinics recommend waiting a minimum of 90 days before beginning another cycle. ASRM recommends that donors complete no more than six total donation cycles.

Potential Risks & Rare Cases
Egg retrieval is considered very safe, especially in experienced hands. Your clinic is trained to treat this procedure with the utmost care and address any abnormalities or complications swiftly. But like all medical procedures, it carries risks. Rare but possible complications include:
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): An exaggerated response to medications, causing severe bloating, weight gain, and fluid shifts.
Infection: Uncommon, but possible any time a procedure involves puncturing tissue.
Bleeding: Rarely, the retrieval needle may cause internal bleeding.
Ovarian torsion: The ovary twists on its blood supply, usually due to enlargement. This is painful and requires urgent care.
Complications from anesthesia. These are uncommon, but mild grogginess is normal for a day or two.
